when replacing an old back bolier with a combi, can the old boiler be disconnected and left in situ behind the fire with the fire still working or does the whole lot need to be removed and a new fire or surround be installed?

it is possible, IF the manufacturer agrees and confirms what needs to be done to disable the boiler from working, ie BAXI (used to) agree that it can be done if the electrics and gas valve to boiler are completely disconnected and labelled to inform anyone that it has been done

thanks for the reply Kirk. does the the plumbing supply need disconnecting as well as the gas and electric?

I think that CORGI and Baxi agreed to advise that they could not be kept in use like that because the fire and flue were not likely to ever get serviced!

Its no different from any other fire in that situation though.

i thought that this situation was acceptable if the gas and electrical supplies were made u/s to the back boiler :?:

It will be much more economic and comfortable to remove the fire, block the chimney and close the large vent and getting rid of a large draft going 24/7. You will be saving a fair chunk of money this way over time.

Drain the boiler fully, disconnect electric permantently and remove or cut through the thermocouple.

Back boiler unit is then de-commissioned.
