i want to disconnect a back boiler from an open fireplace but still use the open coal fire is this possible ?????

Whatever you do DONOT CAP OFF old boiler leave connections open from it and drill a hole in the cast iron boiler

i wouldnt drill a hole in the BB myself. i can understand why some would but it could potentially lead to POC transferring through the open pipework, a minor issue perhaps but a valid one.
as long as you are sure the pipework is venting the BB i would leave it at that. if you are not sure leave it well alone.
