I always used to use sieved sand first to ensure no sharp stones were included. With soil, you have no idea what is concealed in each barrowful. Approx 3" of sand surrounding the main before the complete backfill would be much better for the plastic pipe.
Always best to bed and backfill a pipe with a least some clean backfill, avoiding anything that may damage the pipe, if the soil is overly course with stones etc then they recommend over digging and then use a sand or pea gravel bed and then the backfill needs to be the same - sand /pea graved, sieved soil to around 100mm. Then the top compacting layers can be normal soil but again advised to be free of any sharp materials.
