Backfill under patio

I will be doing a new patio and have dug out in a few places for inspection chambers and drainage pipes. Can I re-use the dirt to back fill if I compact it as much as possible or do I need to use scalpings for everything other than pea gravel immediately around the pipes?

I don't want to waste the dirt in the skip if it can be re-used, but equally don't want the patio to collapse.

Depends how deep and how much soil.
I would use gravel as more solid.

Hard to compact soil after digging out.
