Backpointed roof tiles - cement turning to dust.

We've got a 1950s ex council house with backpointed roof tiles (no liner, just tiles). The roof looks good from outside and underneath ie no sagging or daylight showing, and surveyor said it was fine. However there's a lot of dust coming off the cement, and if I poke it, it'll crumble.

This makes using the loft for storage very dirty and just wondering if there's any intermediate step before getting a new roof?

Line the inside of the rafters with breathable membrane. Something like garden weed control.

It keeps the dust that comes of the torching (the cement on the underside of the tiles) off whatever you store in the loft but doesn't cause a ventilation or condensation problem.

But don't expect it to make the loft as clean as in a modern house. It will still be draughty up there and that brings in a lot of dust.
