Hello All,

I have been sold some Bal bond SBR and the above BAL grip wall tile adhesive in a tub. From a well known tile shop.
I explained that I have ceramic tiles that are 235x355mm and are going on a normal plasterboard wall in a bathroom away from any wet areas ie bath or shower or sink.
I have been advised on another forum that the SBR is not required when using this BAL grip adhesive. But I was dissuaded from using the BAL grip adhesive because of the size of the tiles and the time it might take for the adhesive to set.
I was thinking that if I were to use the BAL grip straight onto the plasterboard and then left it longer before grouting, thus giving it more time and air to set in.

Could this be the answer?

Thanks for your guidance.

Firstly, I would have used Moisture Resistant rather than ordinary wall board in a bathroom. This may be the reason you’ve been advised to prime/seal the boards with SBR before tiling, possibly as an attempt to keep the moisture out but it seems a strange choice. It won’t do anything to enhance tile adhesion unless applied as a slurry coat, particularly with air drying adhesives which will struggle to cope with the large/heavy tiles in any case.

I use BAL White Star generally but with large tiles a cement based, chemical curing powder based adhesive such as Rapidset Flexible should be used; prime the boards with APD before tiling.
