OK, I'm building a conservatory which means the flue from our gas boiler which is on the kitchen wall will be below the roof line. Wht are the options? Will the whole boiler need relocating, or is there a way of extending/moving the flue without moving the boiler? The boiler itself is not of recent vintage - Glowworm Fuelsaver.

PS. we do intend to get a qualified plumber in to do the work, but I just like to know in advance what the possibilities are.

Flue must be outside, and you can't put anything within 600mm of it sideways or above.
If you moved the boiler it might need more clearance than that , cos the rules have changed.
I'd refuse to move it, cos you won't get any new part which you might find you need. It's obsolescent.
Time for a new boiler.

You may be able to get the flue extended if it is a fanned flue boiler, not if it is a balanced flue.

Balanced flue terminals are square boxy things; fan flues are usually cylindrical.

Probably better to have a new boiler if it is balanced flue.

Well you could opt for death I suppose, but a new boiler is usually the more popular choice ;)

Yeah, dying isn't on my options list, cos I wouldn't be able to enjoy our new conservatory!

So what sort of cost might I expect, roughly, for a similar boiler on a nearby wall in the kitchen (but one away from the conservatory)? Just a ballpark figure or range to help me plan.

That's new boiler, re-routing pipework and wiring, new flue and whatever else it needs.

Hi I'm Mrs staithes14 - Would it be more cost efficient to offer to supply materials ourselves as we're part of B & Q Trade Point, and just ask for a quote for labour? There are boilers in the Trade Point catalogue for around £400 and tbh we just want something basic in order to get round this problem and crack on with finishing the conservatory build.

yes your conservatory is much more important than your heating and hot water, buy the cheapest boiler you can find along with the cheapest installer and enjoy the benefits of having spent your money wisely.

Get someone to give you a quote.

The conservatory people should have warned you about this.

No, the heating problem is an essential that has to be fixed safely by a qualified professional, that goes without saying. What I'm attempting to explain is that we're not aiming at a luxury system, just whatever is needed.

Jesus. No need for sarky replies when my wife is only asking a straightforward question. Suggest you read again mate - nobody's saying the conservatory's more important, but neither do we want to spend money unnecessarily. We know sod all about boilers and heating which is why I ask on here. I don't expect people to be rude! Ok? Mate? Now if you apologise for taking the p out of my wife we'll carry on where we left off shall we?
