Hi,
My bandsaw stopped working and i decided to pop the cover off the switch to take a look.
The switch is one of those which is a yellow case & has a green start & red stop push button.
Also when the door is open the saw will stop due to a cut out switch.
Basically 3 wires have come out of the on/off switch.

The switch has 2 pins for IN & also 2 pins for OUT but i dont see any markings next to the terminals.

The wiring is as follows.

240v supply
BLUE WIRE TO LEFT HAND SIDE OF ON/OFF SWITCH & MARKED IN,"see A on photo"
BROWN WIRE TO CUT OUT SWITCH.
BLUE WIRE FROM CUT OUT SWITCH TO RIGHT HAND SIDE OF ON/OFF SWITCH MARKED IN,"see B on photo"

Motor wire.
BLUE WIRE TO OUT A or B
BROWN WIRE TO OUT A or B

Not sure which side of the switch to connect them in.
There are also earths but didnt mention them as screwed to metal case fine.

Thanks

Chinese rubbish.....

Is this plugged in via 13A plug?

Can you confirm A wire is neutral and B wire is line?

The use of a blue wire from the cut-out switch is confusing. As is the large red "N" on the right hand side of the switch.

If A and B are as above, then the blue wire to the motor should go on the same side as the neutral and the brown on same side as the live.

However, if B is the live, blue is a confusing colour to use. If they have just used whatever colours they had knocking around, then who is to say the blue to the motor is not line?

Hi,
Yes 13a plug.
I also think blue to blue and brown to brown,ie match up.

The cable used for the cut off switch is 2 core blue & brown.
So the 240v brown goes down to the cut off switch then comes back up the blue wire, hence 2 blue wires.
Just like a light switch to ceiling rose at home ?

The 240v blue checked with continuity tester is the 13 amp fuse connection so live.
The blue that comes from the cut off switch is then the neutral.
I have now connected the blue from the cut off switch to the terminal marked N

Now how can i tell which out of the motor blue & brown wires are correct.
You would assume brown live but going by how it was wired up coming in im now thinking is blue live ??

If it's a single-phase AC motor, why does it matter which way round it is connected?

I have just matched the wires and now working.
Blue was wired as live to the fuse in the plug.

many thanks for the help

Blue was wired as live to the fuse in the plug.
Just shows you have to check everything
As stated it doesn't really matter which way round you connect the motor - it's 2-wire AC so doesn't care. The main thing is that the in and out are noted - these switches have a small coil to magnetically hold the switch in, and when power is lost it allows the switch to drop out. If you get in and out the wrong way round, then the coil is permanently powered and the red button probably won't work. They are a bit like the contactors (motor starters) with red and green buttons, but the coil doesn't have the power to pull the switch in so the green button physically pushes the mechanical bits internally.

Thanks for the reply.
I got it working with the advice mentioned above.
At the time I had only enough time to get it working.
Next week I will look to take it apart and replace the wiring & connect it correctly.
