banging noise in water pipes

Had to turn off stopcock as was fitting new toilet and the isolation valve to the toilet broke - so stopcock was switched off while new isolation valve was fitted, and ever since this was done there has been a banging noise in the water pipes - have tried turning on all taps and turning off one by one and flushing toilets for a while but this hasn't worked. The banging noise happens even when taps aren't turn on/off or toilet flushed - is there another solution - hope I've given enough details, thanks.

Have you put the isolation valve on upside down?

If not, while you can hear the knocking try turning the valve slowly towards the closed position, if the knocking stops, change the valve.
