Hi there I am removing an understairs cupboard to have it all open and let more light into the hallway and come across something I'm not sure of.

I have removed some old plasterboard and boxing in frame under the incline of the stair case and behind this boxing in on the external wall of the house is just bare brick. I want this all plastered to eventually paper over.

How would I go about doing this? Would I need to put some plasterboard up so its level with the rest of the wall then skim over the lot or would I need to use some other kind of plaster to bring it level with the rest of the wall then skim it all?
Cheers

to me it looks like its cement/mortar with a coat of finishing plaster but I'm a complete beginner.

I'm going to use this area as a bit of a learning curve to see how I get on with plastering. I've done some repair jobs around the house and filled in chases when we had the place rewired but will be forst time tackling a larger area.

If I was to copy what was done before what kind of mix would I need to use as the base coat before finishing? Would I need to pva the wall at all beforehand or just pva the cement base before finishing?

Cheers
