Looking at the plans for my timber frame extension, it mentions 'base plate'. forgive my ignorance but what is a base plate for?

The base/sole plate is the timber fixed first at the bottom of the timber frame - imediatly above the DPC and the timber frame is fixed onto this.

It is sometimes omitted and the bottom rail of the timber frame panels goes onto the DPC instead. But it is good practice to have this sole plate as one continuous timber if possible, and the bottom rails of the panel fixed to it

Its function is to provide a level base to build off

Cheers Woody I was thinking of my reply this morning as it was incorrect I was thinking of a wall plate, silly me.
