Basic Wiring Not Working

Hi all,

I’m trying to replace a ceiling light with a basic ceiling rose.

I can’t seem to get it to work.

Picture one I have red live coming out of the ceiling into brown live on the rose

Black neutral from ceiling going into blue neutral on rose

Then that unsheathed wire which I presume is unsheathed earth (??) it’s out in the picture but I had that in the earth on the rose

The third picture is the light wiring that I took down - but silly me only took one picture and in the picture I only can see black / red but can’t see the unsheathed wire

The previous light I took down was working fine before

Check the terminal connections . Ensure the screws are clamping the copper conductors not their insulation. I assume you have checked the bulb is good ?

There MAY be a cable joint just above the ceiling light that has been disturbed.

Checking the connections at the switch would be a good idea too.

Is the new lampholder bayonet or screw in? (Bayonet by far the most common, yet screw in ones tend to go faulty more.)

No earth? But should work as should the rest, but it points to shoddy workmanship so may be a junction block in the ceiling?

Yes that that bare wire is the earth.

As per your image, it must be covering in some earth sleeve, and held in the in the single metal terminal block.

If you do not have any, you can get short lengths here (Screwfix and tool station only sell long lengths).
