I'm replacing my bathroom and have chosen to swap out the toilet and basin for some units like this (made by ideal standard).

This is my bathroom.

The bath was previously boxed in to the back wall as illustrated. I've also drawn in the new toilet and sink unit.

There is a 190mm gap between the bath and new units.

Would it make sense to extend the box out like this?

Yes. When I install IPS units (integrated panels) they are always specified to fit between walls with no gaps (we cut the panels to fit the frames afterwards)

I would always avoid any boxing inline or below bath level, asking for trouble ( leak/ splash damage).

Tiled floor or shower does not move, a bath usually does breaking any horizontal joints.
A slip in the bath would flood the lower area.

I agree, build the shelf at the end higher than the bath, a meaningful amount you can practically tile say 50mm. Ensure your boxing out is just a few mm away from the end of the bath so that your tiles overlap to let you fill the gap with sealant.

I thought I'd come back and post a 'completed' picture.

I 'm afraid I went against the advice and built the ledge at bath level out of 12mm hardiebacker and sealed everything with a Mapei Shower kit.
The last bath was installed like this and lasted 20 years, so hopefully this will.

(this was my first time fitting a bathroom and tiling)
