My bathroom is being renovated and I'm having 3 wall spot lights installed out of touching distance and an extractor. Will I need to have a certificate for electrical work approval? Should the builders who are doing the electrics arrange this?
Newbie, be gentle!

Cheers

All electrical work needs a certificate.

Most electrical work in a bathroom needs to be notified to the local authority.

Is your builder's electrician a member of one of the schemes? Ask him which one and check up on http://www.electricalcompetentperson.co.uk to make sure.

Note that any electrical circuits that are being installed, or altered in a bathroom now have to be RCD protected.

WALL LIGHTS in a bathroom? Are they designed to be in a bathroom in the zones you have in mind?

Surely only work in zones 0, 1 & 2? Even in my small bathroom, the light fittings and shaver socket are comfortably outside the zones.

Indeed, I would say that "most electrical work in a bathroom" is very much overstating the situation - I would think that in many/most bathrooms,it would only be first-time installation of an electric shower that would be notifiable (even replacement of an existing shower probably isn't).

I did say "most" and then pointed the OP at the link so he could check if his work required notification.

But, there are no issues, if his builder's electrician is a member of a CPS.

You did, but it was that "most" that davelx and I were questioning.

Indeed - and no 'issues' (at least, not in relation to notification!) even if (s)he is not a member of a self-cert scheme if the lights and extractor are outside of the zones.

Kind Regards, John
