Hi all,

I’ll be starting my bathroom renovation next weekend, I’ve already removed the existing suite, fixings and the carpet. Yes, carpet.

Before we get it replastered I need to make preparations for the wall hung basin. I want all the pipe work to be hidden in the solid wall, hot, cold and waste. Consequently, a few questions:

  1. What tools are essential for chasing the wall? I have an SDS drill with various chisel attachments. The chase will be a vertical chase of around 850mm but will need to be deep enough for both feeds and the waste.

  2. Is solvent weld the most appropriate joining method for the 32mm waste given it will be plastered over?

  3. What material should be used for the hot and cold feeds, again, given these will be buried in the wall and plastered over? If copper, I understand they need to be protected from the plaster. Is there a solvent fit 15mm plastic pipe?

Are there any comprehensive guides showing this type of work?

Many thanks.

1 Disc cutter perhaps along with the chisel.
2 Yes.
3 No 15mm solvent weld available that I`ve seen, copper or plastic with inserts fitted.

Unless your wall is full brick, chasing the waste in is a non-starter.
Options;
  • If you have the space, consider a false wall. Bonus- you'll reduce sound transmission to the adjacent room
  • Yes plinths are naff. Consider a cupboard with a basin on top of it (there are some very elegant ones if the budget will run to it, Google worktop basin ,and you can hide all the usual bathroom junk in it)

If you could loose a couple of inches you could batten the wall with 2x2.

I did that and all the pipes fitted and I left a recess for an illuminated mirror.
