    Hi

I am desperate for some expert advice. I have looked at alot of topics on the forum but still confused.

I have moved into a house and currently in the process of upgrading the bathroom. I opted to utilise the bath which is new. I have installed a bath/shower mixer tap and before installing the shower screen, hose/bracket etc I need to tile.

The wall in front of the bath/mixer tap measures approx 2'6" x 5'6". It is in fact a box constructed from new 8mm ordinary ply. It actually hides some of the service pipes (boiler/soil pipes)ect.

This wall will hold the shower head and rail so will be subject to splashing etc.

As I do wish to use ceramic tiles I need to know what preparation I need to do to the 8mm ply and the best tile adhesive and grout (waterproof)? The other 2 walls are solid and plastered so I shall just re tile these.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

The 'Silicone Kid' will be along shortly to advise. You'll recognise him cause he'll have a tube in either hand and a Scottish accent. ;)

Yes read the sticky, but if it were me no tile on ply, rip it out, 8mm is nowhere near enough, get some 12.5 mm plasterboard up and tank it, or use tile backer board, as for waterproof adhesive non of it is, nor is grout with the exception of Epoxy.

Use a quality trade adhesive, bagged cement based, such as Mapei or Bal, and grout by the same.

Do a search through the tile forum or look for posts by tictic, gcol and Richard C all top blokes that know their stuff.

What a childish response. Looking a your very early sticky it appears you have decided to re-entry the Forum.

I suggest you don't bother if your response is the best you can give.

Standard ply is no good, the veneer adhesive isn’t waterproof & 8mm is not thick enough anyway. Even WBP is a crap tile base to use for a wall; ply is wood which isn’t dimensionally stable when exposed to moisture & it could turn into a disaster zone if used in a wet area, especially if you have concealed pipework behind there. Take the ply down & replace it with a quality 12mm waterproof tile backer board & tile directly onto that.

Plaster has a max weight limit of 20 kg/sqm, including >4 kg/sqm for the adhesive & grout; what size/weight are your tiles?

Don’t mind gcol, he’s only the messiah & the bible is also quiet old now!
