Hi. I have been advised by a very expensive engineer that the reason is the flue is blocked causing a backdraft, which in turn has damaged the pcb. Does this sound right as not sure if I am just being ripped off (being female!). When he removed all the covers however, the flame was still going out. On for about 4 secs, then off for 2 or 3 secs, on again, etc, etc. Please help as I have been quoted a huge amount of money to have the flue cleaned and a new pcb fitted by an engineer who actually seemed a bit unsure himself!? Thanks in advance.

I cant even begin to imagine what he's trying to describe.

Lets start again. On the display is a series of LEDs. Marked as temperatures. Do any of these FLASH indicating a fault?

Hi. No fault lights coming on at all. Temperature lights don't seem to reach a specified degree before flame goes out

Get rid of you 'very expensive engineer' and talk to friends and relatives for recommendations or contact one of the regulars here.

Do check their Gas Safe Registration, especially on the back, to see what their qualifications are.

Dump him .
Symptons sound very like a faulty sensor part number 343571 cost about a tenner and take minutes to fit

Thanks DP. Yes I checked his Gas Safe card and he had plumbing and heating (although expired the day before he was here).

Namsag - thought as much. Was pretty sure that he was milking me for a pcb as loads of other blogs said this seems common. Can anyone buy the part? Will have to get someone to fit it obviously!

Thanks guys!

Hi again.
Been looking for the part and my book shows the Spark or Sensing Electrode as part 247384, GC Code E66 411. Is this the right one namsag? The other sensor is the temperature one (part 247394), which I assume is not the one I want? First sensor is about £9 online.

Alot of guys who aren't that good often fall back on the old PCB diagnosis when they can't figure a problem out! Sounds like that's what's maybe happened here...

I agree Andygasman2010. Would hate to fork out for a pcb if namsag is right and it's just the sensor.

Would love confirmation that its the 'Spark or Sensing Electrode' though?? As two sensors shown in book. Please see my previous comment??

It's kinda strange in that it's not going to any kind of flashing lockout, without being able to do a few checks I wouldn't like to say. A PCB is about £100 plus fitting but as you know it's not definatly that. British Gas to a one-off fixed price repair for about £180 whatever the fault, maybe worth considering...?

thanks andygasman2010 - will look into the British Gas thing. Never sure what to do when these things happen!

Thanks for the confirmation namsag. I will attempt to get the sensor changed first before getting British Gas out (as suggested by andygasman2010) as have read the small print on their website and it states something about only one fault being covered under the fixed price! Also fixed price incl VAT in my area is £225.

Thanks to you all for your help - you have been great and at least now I have a plan a and plan b!! xxx

To be honest you can do it yourself sensor on left handside sits in a dry pocket and just unscrews after taking little electical connection off
