I am at the end of my tether with this boiler. We moved in the new house 6 months back and it came with a gas fire in the front room with a boiler behind it. We have had nothing but problems with it since then. First off...

The timer switch was not working properly so we replaced it. The problem with the old one was the buttons where not doing anything, but now we have the new one we have to have water and heating runing together. Switch the heating off and just have hot water running and the rads heat up any how! this is a problem in the summer months when you dont need heating on!!!! could this be caused by the fact there is no thermostat on the wall?? if this is the problem how easy is it to fit one?

But since all this we have hit bigger problems.

Now the heating will fire up and warm the house up or at times it won't even get that far. It starts up runs some times for as little at ten minutes and then you hear the shut off thingy in side go click and it goes off. other times it will run for 2 days fine going on and off by the timer till it gets fed up and stops again.

I dont have a singel clue what it is or why it could be doing it, I dont pretend to be a plumber and have as much knowledge of a boiler as i do a human brain.

Many thanks

Steve

It sounds to me as if its not wired up properly.

As you dont have a clue then surely the obvious thing to do is to call a competent heating professional?

This is what I am intending to do at some point but i just wondered if someone could give me a rough idea of what the problem could be so as i can work if i am about to ripped off. I dont want some one to walk in and scratch there head then tell me that I need a whole new heating system when it is a loose nut or a wire in the wrong place. :D

If you choose a competent engineer with a good reputation then you are not likely to be ripped off. Try to get a personal recommendation.

Then ask what their charging policy is so that you understand. Check they offer a no-fix no-fee ! That sorts out the men from the boys.

We charge a fixed price diagnostic fee so clients know what it will cost excluding spare parts. You might need pump, timeclock, motor valve etc. These parts are mostly £50-£60 and it probably only needs one.

It can be quite time consuming finding a fault on a wrongly wired system and sometimes its so bad that its easier to start again.

It should take less than an hour to wire up if all the parts are together in the same place.

Why do you have such a fear of being "ripped off"?

Unless you replaced it with an identical model then it is almost certain that the new one is wired differently.
Did you check the compatibility chart that came with the new one and follow the instructions?

Very important for open flued appliances

Get the boiler and fire front serviced

competent engineer should take about 1 / 1.5 hrs to do correcttly, everything comes out other than the heat exchanger and chassis.

yup its an exact match. fear of being ripped off is due to 2 out of 5 so called gas fitters i have called said they would want to fit a whole new system as they dont recomend keeping the baxi system as it out dated, yet the system is still sold. Also in our last house we had a wall boiler and the pump was on its way out so we called a local guy who was recomended by corgi an hour later he was still raming his screw driver into the boiler, later that night the boiler packed up altogether! we called some one else who came out and solved the problem in half hour but they no longer work.

There are two main types of CORGi registered people.

There are installers who do just that but dont usually have much experience finding faults.

Then there are people who specialise in fault finding and repairing boilers but dont usually fit them. The timing of this work does not fit in well with installations which need 2-3 days of uninterupted work.

CORGI do nor "recommend" anyone, they only give names of registered people.

A personal recommendation is the best solution but even that is not infalible.
