I have a Baxi Bermuda 552 Back Boiler and was told by my gas safe engineer who services it that the ignition is on its way out. Hence, tricky to reignite.
When I asked him if he could replace it, he said that the problem is getting the parts as is a very old boiler and it's unlikely he'd be able to get the parts.

Have had a search online and can see lots of places selling these parts, some of them official Baxi parts.

Will ask him in detail next time he's round but just wanted to ask on here whether I'm missing something.

I know it's an old boiler but it works well when running and really don't want to get rid of it just yet, just for an ignition switch.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks

These are very reliable old boilers.

However, the efficiency of large old cast iron heat exchanger boilers is probably about 20% lower than that of a modern condensing boiler. With the higher gas prices we now have that can make it financially worthwhile to replace it in spite of the £2,200 that I used to charge to replace them with a combi.

However, the convenience of a reliable boiler and the added benefit of a gas fire to increase the heat output during very cold spells make it understandable that many will opt to keep them in spite of the added cost of running them due to their lower efficiency.

I also usually recommend keeping a hot water cylinder for many households. Partly on account of their higher flow rate and partly because of the backup provided by an electric immersion heater should the gas boiler break down as sometimes happens with the latest models. I also wonder if we are soon going to experience a shortage of gas as a result of the shrinking supplies as we try to limit the use of fossil fuels as well as questionable political aspects which might limit gas supplies.

Couldn't agree more. Thanks

Maybe the reward for a return trip coupled with the low cost of the part would not be sufficient for the job. I doubt you would be happy with a £50+ bill for the repair.
