Yes it's repairable and no you can't put on the fire. You need to get these checked mate and the also the chimney/flue.
The fire might be okay but the flue might be blocked so you can't take a chance unless you want a fatality on your hands.

id seriously consider ringing an engineer. that at least sounds like he knows what hes talking about.its a big concern he recommended your fire/boiler would be ok cos of ventilation.sure he said that.
Thanks holty and tonybhoy. I have switched off the boiler and fireplace. The engineer's visit is booked for wed morning. Due to Xmas break i am struglling to get someone in emergency.
