Baxi heat exchanger

I have a 5 year old (just out of warranty) Baxi Platinum 33 combi boiler.
My problem is that although the heating is working perfectly when I have a shower or run water the temperature keeps going from hot to Luke warm.
I have had a British Gas engineer call who advises I first try to have a Hydroflow fitted and later have a new Domestic hot water heat exchanger plate.
I have also heard that the DHW plate can be cleaned etc.
How successful is this cleaning and what do I use.
Also I class myself a a pretty competent diyer so can this be something I can do myself.
If anyone can give me step by step instructions or tips that would be great.

You need the plate doing now. Remind your Bg guy he's not able to sell you an upgrade for the next 3 months!

Cleaning a plate hex requires specialist equipment to pump acidic chemicals through it. New ones aren't exactly expensive though - cheaper than hiring a pump and buying the chemicals to put in it

They are now but they weren't five years ago I don't think

Blocked plate HEs are not covered by the boiler maker's warranty.

It is not their dirt!
