New to all this forum stuff but my aged parents had a chap round today to fix their boiler and well he didnt. he said the wiring was badly done but its worked ok for the last 2-3 years so thing he was making excuses not to bother being christmas eve and all.

Looking at the guidance I have copied and pasted the content with my bits added hope this is what is needed.

1) Boiler make / model (gas or oil)

Baxi solo 2 mains gas

2) What is / is not happening.

The power led lights up but it doesnt run

3) Has ANYTHING else been done or changed recently.

Had a new gas valve a month ago

4) When did the problem start?

few days ago

5) When does it happen? eg, heating coming on or going off.

when trying to turn the heating on nothing happens other than power led the fan does not run the pump runs but thats it. I wired the fan up in the garage to a mains supply and that ran ok so presume its not that

6) Anything else you feel may be of relevance.

Read in the forums that it may be the pipes are blocked to the pressure thingy (technical eh?) can i just remove and blow them through? are the special silicone heat proof stuff or can i use any old suitable bore pipe?

ran through the flowchart in the manual and checked the potentiometer which registered the correct values on the multimeter and suspect the pcb is at fault. Read another entry where a chap had repaired his is this something that is checkable as i dont have a clue about electronics but am quite competent at soldering. any help gratefully accepted as the old folks are moaning that they want to come and stay until its fixed

7)Please remember we are only seeing what you type and not the job !!

not sure what else i can put?

Id say pcb,air pressure switch wont be the fault as it needs the fan to run to open it up so unless you get luckyn and have a dodgy thermistor then id say pcb

I am guessing from what you have said that your parents are in some kind of social housing as the attitude of the engineers who attended is typical of the maintenance contractors they employ. An independent would have been very keen to get it working for them over Christmas.

Unfortunately, I am worried by how you have been opening up the combustion chamber cover and fiddling with gas safety related parts.

For safety reasons I am not going to give you any advice relating to the boiler as you should not be touching it.

What I can say is that you should be pestering the HA to get the boiler fixed and telling them that if they dont then you will get a private firm to repair it and charge the cost to them! In practice that might be difficult.

It may well be the PCB which is why we keep them in stock to enable us to repair boilers at holiday times.

If you check for 240V at the fan terminals and it isn't there, which from what you have said is probably the case, then it sounds like the pcb gone.

It is not unusual to get the solo 2 working again by using the extremley technical appox after years of training . WALLOP the housing amazing how many start up and work for years after.

Agile so how many different boards do you keep in stock over the holidays to get first time fix.

All three Puma, Lynx original all three, Baxi Solo, 80/105, Performa 24/28, Worcester 35cdi and 24cdi, Vaillant 242, Sine 18, Biasi 24S, both M90, M96, M110, Halstead Eden, Ideal Responses, Icos/Isar, Sprint and most of the older numbered Ideals, Sime 90, etc.

Lots of odd older ones too.

But that selection covers over 95% of PCB faults in the London area which we are likely to encounter. They are based on the likely PCB faults and NOT on the boiler makes visited.

Unfortunately the odd ones are not so well catalogued so I sometimes end up buying one when I later find I had one anyway.

Because we dont charge any more to return with a spare the onus is on us to take what we are likely to need with us on the initial visit!

Quite a comprehensive list ,but its a lot of dead money to be sitting on.

thanks for all your help I will go get a pcb from somewhere today??

i removed the cover is that bad?

my parents live in their own home but as like most people of their age they have the house as the main asset.

the guy that came out just said that the wiring was rubbish which seemed a little crass as its all factory type stuff with the fixed connectors. in truth i think he just couldnt be ar$ed to do it. as he couldnt get out fast enough although the old lady can talk so maybe that explains it (hind leg and donkey spring to mind)

anyone know where i could get a pcb today? in the manchester/ bolton /bury region

and thanks again its amazing you all replied so quickly and so constructively.

PTS (plumbing trade supplies ) should have one in stock should be one up your way

thanks for that, there is one near me in bury but as you might have guessed they were closed when i tried. anyone on the forum have one within a reasonable distance?

had a scour around today and found a post by raden who revealed the info about the pcb having a common fix where you need to replace 7 capacitors so £2.50 later at maplin and my parents are now warm.

Thank you all again for your help and maybe one for any future solo owners to take note of.

Thanks again and have a great WARM new year

Jamie
