Have you had it serviced recently, sounds like weak thermocouple or pilot flame.

if it was the thermocouple would it not come on at all? pilot flames looks gd. the pipes coming from the boiler about 80cm away r still cold which made me think it could be the pump not circulating the heat?

Exactly Stuart. You need to access your pump and check that is working b4 anything else.

To check if it is definitely the pump, wait for the boiler to cool down, then turn the boiler stat down to 2 or 3 then switch it on. Wait for the boiler to go out and then turn the stat fully on. If the boiler now starts the fault could well be the pump.

thanks, put the thermostat down to 2 and the boiler still came on then cut out after a minute. looks like its the pump then! is there anway i could get this pumps to go without actualy getting to it like say a powerflush or installing a second pump on the system with this?

Is it possible to trace the electric cables from the timer to locate the pump,
Is the system fully pumped, have you checked that the expansion tank in the loft has water in it?.

no they don't come out where it should, only the supply for the boiler. yes the expansion tank has water in it.
