This oven is 10 years old and has never had a problem before.The fan turns on and the grill works but the element sparks and there is no oven heat. Is this worth mending?

Sounds like the element has gone, they are not that difficult to fit. Could cost you £30-50 for the part though, the choice is yours or the missuses, likely the latter

Do you have to take the oven out of it's housing to replace the element?
No you open the oven door, then you should see a back plate that has fin vents in it.
This plate can be unscrewed from inside the oven, remove the back plate, then you will see the element, this too will be screwed in two maybe four screws, then should pull out.
