Hi a friend of mine is doing a gas course to be able to fitt and comission gas boilers . At the moment he knows nothing about pipes or plumbing ,it is a 2 year internet course when he goes for exams and practical 5 times a year (2 days at a time) . Are these courses any good ?

Yes they are great , within two years your friend will be able to earn loadsamoney , these courses are geared up to teach the 'inexperienced' how to become 'experienced'. :D

Nothing will beat real world experience. Having lessons in the classroom on a predetermined jig does not prepare you for fitting boilers in lofts on a summers day, or gas leaks that are 4mb on certain gas meters, or tracing a leak only to find it is under 2' of concrete.

Water - probably.
Gas - no, real world work experience is needed there.

I personally know of guys who have done these courses and now after 'passing ' realise that getting money off customers requires'real' experiance and quality work for their money.
The courses never prepare anyone as a full 3 and a half yr course alongside apprenticship can so is just really a legal 'scam' , .
Let him do it and youll know what I mean when you see him stacking shelves soon after and not answering his phone for fear of the cutamers he has left with dangerous/sub standard work.
I dont want to put you off, just telling you the reality of it ;)
