Hi,

We have a Bermuda Back Boiler which must date back to the mid 1980s and generally it works fine and is serviced yearly but now it is getting warmer we have gone to the Water Only setting and now not getting any hot water!

If I have the setting on Water + Heating then it fires up fine and we get both heating and water but when on Water Only it tends to not fire up or fires up rather pathetically or if it does fire up properly you hear a boiling noise within a few minutes and then the flame goes out.

Any ideas what this is? We've always had a problem but generally it settles down and behaves on Water Only but not this time and I can't keep having the heat on!

Incidentally we had the Hot Water Cylinder replaced a couple of weeks ago.

So should I get the plumber or the boiler repair?

Thanks,
Phillip

Without being told what your system is its impossible to do anything other than make guesses.

We know nothing about the capabilities of whoever replaced the cylinder.

Its always better to let whoever services the boiler to also do associated work like replacing cylinders!

Could be motor valve fault !

Could be a gravity hot water system where the cylinder has been replaced with a standard one which is not suitable for gravity circulation !

A heating engineer would understand the system and be able to diagnose what the problem is and repair or modify it as required.

Although very simple and reliable, a BBU is very inefficient compared with a modern condensing boiler.

Sounds like your diverter valve is stuck in mid position, giving you water/heating but won`t switch over to hot water only. You can change the head on this motor, if you are capable of doing the wiring,it`s pretty simple, like for like wiring wise.Hope this helps. Not a breakdown engineer, just a gas safe plumber. ;)

It sounds like a blocked cold feed on the return, if the boiler fires up on hot water and then reaches temperature quickly and shuts off, then that would indicate no circulation on the coil of the cylinder.......Seemples ;)
