Best Budget Wall Stud Finder

I need to put up some shelves in my bedroom. The house was built in the late 60s and someone suggested I get Stud Finder to find where the wooden studs are.
The wall they they are going on is room dividing wall and its not brick.

Can anyone suggest a good Budget Stud Finder?

Free - tap the wall and listen to find the more solid bits.

Cheap - use a strong magnet to find where the screws or nails are.

Both are cheaper and more effective than any stud finder device.

That's all we ever do i.e. use the acoustic method. We mark off where the stud will strike the wall or ceiling, arm the small cordless drill with a small bit and tap and drill away.

Do 60s houses have stud walls, or paramount?

40mm x 40mm header/sole plate with 40mm x 40mm uprights every 1.2m. A good magnet should find them, for what they are worth.

HD as in "hard disk"? Yes, probably. I have some that are approx 10p coin sized, probably similar alloy, and they are more than sufficient.
