Which is the best for PCBs please. There seem to be so many. I was thinking of an Antex ? Are they worth the extra, if so, which model for occasional PCB soldering otl.
Thanks

Antex for me - used them for years.
The M12 or C15 would do PCB work beautifully. Replacement tips and elements are available too.

Through hole or surface mount?

They are different technologies and depending upon how much soldering your planning there are different types of soldering stations.
What's your expected use and budget?

Getting back into a hobby I had some years ago, intend to make up kits etc on PCBs, nothing very extensive!

Good choice! The bits on these are plated and last a long time, but do keep it in a stand to prevent overheating and reduced element life. The stands used to have a damp sponge for wiping clean, too.
As a teacher we used multicore solder 60/40 lead / tin and the results were perfect, but no doubt thats responsible for destroying the planet or other nonsense.

You may find a desoldering pump useful, especially if you intend to remove chips from pcbs or whatever.

check out the TS100 soldering irons available on amazon and ebay , they are fantastic , can be powered from any 12v -24v source . I use mine in the field often up ladders , ive rigged it up to an 18v Bosch battery for a portable solution. The irons are fantastic and ive had a fair few in my time . beats a Weller pyropen hands down.
