Best paint finish for timber windows

My timber windows (vertical sliding sashes) have been painted several times, but the end result never seems to be entirely satisfactory or very long lasting. Can anyone recommend paint to achieve the best weather resistant results?

it's more likely the quality of preparation than the quality of paint.
