Best paint for bannister/hand rail.

Any particular kind of paint recommended for bannister and/or gloss/matt. Thinking of going pure white !?

Currently painted a dull matt creamy colour. Will it need sanding/priming?

Not really, just use oil based. You will of course have to rub down and i'd use an undercoat with a couple of top coats.

I've just used white, satin finish, oil based paint to do architraves, skirting and windowsills. I think it's a nicer finish than gloss and doesn't show up imperfections as much in my opinion.
