Is it better to use a shed or builders merchants,or even bespoke timer merchant. We have all three in Sheffield, but Wickes/BQ very dear for plywood it seems. Thanks for reading

Use a timber merchants whenever possible. The pre packed balsa wood from the big DIY is usually twisted. Atleast you can see each individual boardvat the merchants. If it's that twisted they will cut it off, give you extra or give it to you for free. With the b&q wood won't know till you unpack it. Hope that helps
The timber from wickes and such places, in my experience, is usually very dry and, for want of a better word - cr*p!
Always get mine from builders merchant, usually turns out cheaper as well.
Remember to ask/order in 300mm incriments ie 1.8m, 2.1m, 2.4m etc as they charge by the metre.
If comparing prices, always ask if a particular quote from a proper merchant includes or is plus vat.
