Why on earth would someone of 78 years old want the high stress full time job of being president other than to try to create some kind of legacy.

It may have been his life-long ambition. Apparently, it's something he's wanted for the last few years.
It could be worse, he might have wanted to be King of the World, and be prepared to lie and cheat his way to achieve it.
