I have heard today of a stubborn ole welsh bugger electrician who labels circuits in wales in only the welsh language (possibly rightly so), is this legal??
Are we reaching a stage were possibly all instalations should be labelled in more than one language...or possibly colour coded??

Any thoughts on this ?

There must be something in the regs regarding signage, marking and certs. Maybe non English is acceptable when you know other 3rd parties who may maintain or adapt also speak the lingo.

However Wales is less than 40% Welsh speaking / reading, so for that Id say its a ECIR fail (well it would be if I went anywhere near it) :D

Guy sounds like a right tw4t.

For a start, Sections 514.12 - 514.15 of the regs specific the exact wording required for various labels/warnings - and that 'exact wording' is in English. I presume there would be no objection to the wording being repeated in other language(s), but I can't see that such labels would be BS7671-compliant if the specified wording in English did not also appear.

Kind Regards, John

The IEE regs are non-statutory however if he is a member of a self cert scheme then he may be bound by them.

[I presume you mean 'IET']
Sure, and that's why I only said that I didn't believe that non-English warning labels would be BS7671-compliant. As you say, whether BS7671 -compliance 'matters' to the electrician is a different matter. However, as being discussed in another thread (and even if the electrician is not constrained by scheme membership), unless the electrician can produce a convincing argument to the contrary, non-compliance with BS7671 is likley to be regarded as indicating non-compliance with part P of the Building Regs (which is 'statutory').

Kind Regards, John

Hasn't our own resident stubborn ole welsh b*****r electrician got a theory that as BS 7671 is not available in Welsh it has no force there?
