In my spare bedroom doubling as an office.

heating set to off
hot water set to on

system is prehistoric a: stelrad Ideal

type: traditional gravity with vented HWT
cold tank and hot water tank in loft
hot water tank in upstairs airing cupboard
boiler in kitchen

we have no TRVs

there are no controls at all in airing cupboard

everything is inside boiler case which is on the wall
flue is not balanced it goes up da chimney.

Anybody got any ideas what it is and can I do it myself?

If you have gravity hot water, one rad is supposed to get hot, isn’t it? Although it’s usually the bathroom one. Well, it was when we had gravity hot water.

That system was for when you had a solid fuel fire the rad was used as a heat dump and the bathroom was used to dry towels, wont cause any problems by closing the rad valve down with a gas boiler

Turn the radiator off at the lockshield
Yeah Ive just done that.

took a while it had rusted shut, had to break off the plastic cap.

but does it mean there are other problems?

Based on the description of your system, then, yeah, probably. But, unless you can appraise the system, you'll just have to wait till something goes fubar.
