Black dishwasher element

Hi all,
Got a little problem with my dishwasher. The element seems to be burnt(not due to melted plastics). Approx half of it is coated in a fine black residue. I also noticed that the element was glowing red hot(not sure if this is normal). Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be.
