Black Friday was a day in 1921 when the leaders of the rail and transport unions decided not to support the miners in a strike. The term "Black Friday" comes from the feeling of betrayal and lack of solidarity that many labour radicals felt towards the union leaders.

In USA of course different, their tax rules resulted is shops wanting to shift stuff before the end of their tax year, but our tax year goes April to April, so why do firms want to sell cheap in this country?

so why do firms want to sell cheap in this country?
Lots of “special Black Friday deals” are higher price than normal year round price

What bugs me is we get “Christmas prices” ie full whack price on stuff they know we have to buy for Christmas presents before Christmas…..then on Xmas onwards suddenly they all get reduced in price. I’m tempted to move my Christmas to New Year’s Eve and buy all my presents from Xmas onwards.

It plays into the mindset of the shopper who thinks 50% off means they have saved money by spending, like the 2 for 1 offers.

Shouldn't it have been called Scab Friday?

Indeed. I used wait until boxing day and often got 30% off.

Same reason we have imported other US events. Years ago Halloween was hardly a thing - now it's a big diary date for some. Saw some houses covered in lights and Halloween tat (luckily not too close to me) - must have spent a fortune. It's all come down now to be replaced by hideous Chinese tat for Xmas. Just more ruses to part attention seekers from their over abundant supply of cash.

Meldrew rant over! ;)

Seems to me that those poor people in social housing have more money to spend on useless tat.
