blackish specs on coving

Hi

Recently bought old 30's semi which has turned into a substantial project.

one of the jobs has involved striiping anaglypta wallpaper from walls and ceilings.

after stripping the paper from ceiling and large coving, i have noticed black specs on the coving in a corner on an outside wall. It looks somewhat fungal and covers an area of around a foot. any ideas whats causing this.

i can get a pic but dont have one right now
