Hi, I am planning on building some raised beds around a patio using blockwork and then fitting porcelain cladding. The beds will be about 4m by 1m and about 0.6m high.

To keep the costs down I was looking to use a single skin of 100mm wide blocks, would this be enough? Or should I use 140mm wide blocks, or do I need to lay the blocks on their backs?

Also, I was looking to use a footing 200mm wider then the blocks, dig down 300mm, put concrete in the bottom 150mm concretet. Is this enough for clay soil?

Thanks

100mm blocks with be fine.

Foundation depth will depend on the ground condition, 300mm would be a minimum if the ground is firm at that level. You should see a colour and texture change from the topsoil layer.
