Alright, I managed to get a company around and they appear to have fixed it and they've serviced the setup at the same time. I got lucky, I think. The top vessel in my pictures was apparently full of water, they've filled it with air. They took the front cover off the boiler and found a small drip from a flexi-pipe with a Jubilee clip on it and they've fixed that as well. They identified my big tank had 2 immersion heaters that were on constantly, so they've turned them off and set up the timer - they were amazed my bills weren't very high (but they aren't). Maybe there'll be an improvement.
All-in-all... a good result, and they're local so if anything goes wrong I can get back in touch and have them back around.
@dpm_dpmartin Good to here mate. In all honesty it would be where most of us would be looking giving some of the specific symptoms you gave but hope that you understand that we can't give advice out as we may be wrong and if we are it's very bloody dangerous.
On the plus side you now have a company that you can trust to look after it for you and you have hot water for the weekend.
Thanks for getting back too as many don't and maybe people can see now how quickly a problem can be resolved with the right advice and the right people for the job.
Also as a side note you should thank the original company that you usually use for stating they don't do that kind of work. Massive plus points for them. Don't go taking the other work off them as they have been good to you by being so honest, some wouldn't.
This just demonstrates that there are many companies who will come and check everything you have on their visit and not just focus on the single point you called them for.
The leak in the boiler could have caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage if left leaking.
