I have a fairly old non-combi type gas boiler connected to a digital timer which has been working fine until yesterday. The pilot light is lit and the digital timer is switched on, but I cannot get the boiler to fire up either when turning up the thermostat or when switching the timer to 'on'. There is also no 'click' when I turn the thermostat up which previously used to fire up the boiler.

On the one occasion the boiler did fire up this morning, it then switched off after a couple of minutes, but the pilot light remains lit.

Any ideas please? I guess I need to get an expert in but any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

Sounds like thats your problem. Can you verify that by running hot water to kick the boiler in or alternatively, temporarily turning the hot water cylinder stat up just to test it kicks the boiler in. If so (don't forget to turn it back down), new thermostat needed.
WARNING; In case you don't know, the room thermostat switches mains voltage (not low voltage), so if you replace, make sure all electricity to your system is switched off.
