My daughter lives in rented accommodation and just before Christmas an engineer came to repair a small leak on the combi boiler. The leak stopped for a while then a few days ago it started again. She contacted the letting agency who again sent the engineer out, (same one), who this time said she really needed a new boiler as this one was on its last legs. He reduced the leak but couldn't stop it completely. Last night, (Thursday), there was a bang and the sound of roaring started coming from the boiler. Fearing the worst they grabbed the kids out of bed at 1.00am and sat in the car across the dual carriageway from the house and rang me. I went round and on getting out my car could here this noise from about 30 yards away. Went into the house and as I did so noticed water spurting out of the pressure release pipe. My daughters partner had turned off the electric and gas to the boiler before they ran out. When I looked the engineer had left the filling loop turned on and over pressurised the boiler. Once I turned this off the noise stopped and the flow outside reduced dramatically before eventually stopping.
Does the relief valve now need replacing or will it re-set its self? The leak appears to be coming from the diverter valve assembly. I have asked that a Gas-Safe engineer comes to look at the boiler rather than just a plumber.
Only info I have about the boiler is it is a 'Kingfisher' brand.
