Boiler sizing...

how do other engineers deal with the public, and some installers, desire to oversize boilers...

People seem to fail to understand the limitations of radiator output, and pipe sizing..and even heat loss...

driving me mad...any one else?

Do you not do your own heat loss calcs when quoting, regardless of what the customer is saying ???
Obviously combi are sized for hot water so that's probably 95% of the retrofit market?

yes of course I do Lee, but there seems to be so much ignorance about this subject and the customer always believes that bigger is better...

and may be its because I am in London and deal with houses I am finding that most of my work is not combi's!

I would tell them what the situation really is and then say that if they really wanted a larger boiler then I would fit it for them but only after they have signed an indemnity!

I am very happy to walk away from idiots!

That big oil boiler is nearly 50kw. The property has about 25kw heat loss tops.
It never cycles on/off inefficiently.

A 25kw boiler with the numpty controls would leave the occupants freezing and devour more oil than the big 50kw system.
You combi kings with your numpty controls have a lot to learn.

The customer is king at the end off the day. If they want a big boiler then give it to them but engineer the system to be efficient.
He who pays the piper calls the tune.
Simples.
If you can't play the tune then by all means "walk away".

This was that install he was getting all Billy big balls about. What was it? 45 a year customer with a few hundred head of cows?
