We have a worcester hi flow 400 about 13 years old. The hot water is very noisy and keeps over heating and cutting out constantly having to hit the reset button.

I have had various parts replaced under maintenance contract with local firm including chocked vessel hose, dhw themostat both stats replaced.

Boiler flushed out and used x400 in for 2 weeks. Worked ok for about 6 months but now when the hot water is on the boiler sounds like its gasping.

Is it worth flushing again or just replacing the boiler?

Firm says not covered under maintenance for sludge in boiler, by the way when flushed water was pretty clean

These are getting a bit old now!

They seem very susceptable to sludge.

Its often possible to have clear water and significant blockages inside.

An experienced engineer might be able to desludge it properly but not many specialise in doing low value jobs when there is a nice high value replacement job about!

X400 is very gentle - a flocculating agent, mostly.
There are stronger elixirs to use, such as Fernox Restorer (I forget their new numbers)
Sentinel X800
Fernox DS-40

Worth a try if it stretches your boiler's life.

A restricted hot water heat exchanger would reduce the flow and heat transfer through the primary pipe work and HE of the boiler, causing an overheat problem.

Done a few of these recently with a similar problem and was just a blocked filter, worth a shout maybe.

spoke to heating contractor not covered under maintence agreement for replacement filter sugested we contacted worcester direct who quoted one off price £210 for parts and labour visit but if it is boiler sludge they wont look at it but still to pay 210 not sure what to do whether to just bite the bullet and replace boiler rather than throw more money away any advice?

Just get a good local independent who specialises in repairs not installations. Just like Green Chop above.
