Hi,

Yesterday our washing machine tripped the RCD, mid-cycle.

A rinse cycle, drain or spin cycle is fine. It happens 7 or 9 minutes into a wash cycle, so I thought it might be the element. I tested the element which measured 27 ohms, and the thermistor, which measured 5kilohms. No obvious other signs of problems/burning etc. Is there an issue with the PCB shorting out when powering the element ? How do I check this out ??

The machine is quite old and I have replaced the brushes about 4 years ago.

Any advice for testing, diagnosis would be welcome.

Cheers,

Simon

If it's really the RCD that tripped (has a test button on it), then you are looking at leakage from (probably) live to earth. This would mean you had to measure the resistance from one end of the element to metal casing of the element, but you should really do this at an elevated voltage that your meter probably doesn't do. Other causes could involve water leaks. It's not all that easy to diagnose without the right equipment.
