Washing is fine axcept there is a gritty residue inside some of the crockery mainly on the top shelf of thewasher. Any suggestion gratefully received.

Clean the detrius out of the spray arms, stop putting food stuff into the dishwash and use a dishwasher cleaner. You'll have to continually clean the spray arms until you've got all the muck out of the system.
