Thanks I just rang the people who make Boss White. The guy there said some use it for reassurance that the joint won't leak but it is not a necessity. It shouldn't make it harder to undo again. He said to use PTFE tape on the threads and maybe a smear of this on the olive.
did he. i take it hes the t boy.
as i don't know any descent plumber that wraps ptfe all round the thread.
apart from diyer's.
ptfe round the thread will make it hard to get off next time, it just bungs the thread up.
the olive does the job of making the seal and if the water passes the olive the joint has failed.
I've only used Boss White + Hemp on steel 3/4" , 1/2" threaded steel pipe, I suppose it could be used on olives but I was under the impression Boss white on its own is pretty useless. And as mentioned should only be used on non potable water, espcially hemp as that harbours bacteria.
For compression joints I have not had one leak yet, If done right no jointing compound or PTFE tape is ever required. Don't be scared to not tighten it up to the max! Big misconception, they only need a few turns to give a good joint. I've come across a few bodges where the olives have been wrapped in miles of PTFE tape, all that was needed was a new olive and the pipe cleaning up. Job done.
