box, square edge tile trims

I always used a standard straight edge tile trim in the past but haven't tiled for a while and there now seems to be a trim called "box square edge".

It this purely for looks or does it serve a purpose?

looks...its tricky and less forgiving to mitre . looks mint on external corners but can look a mess if everythings not bang on flat and plumb.
