I have a 68 corvette the R side brake lights have stopped working. every once and awhile they come on but lately only the left ones come on. I have checked the bulbs they look fine. the wire connection at the rear seems okay. Replaced the brake switch but it did not solve the problem. Some suggested it might be a ground fault issue . Im good with mechanical fixes but electrical issues are challenging to understand. So I'm trying to think this through systematically. My R brake lights dont work when I press the brakes yet when I turn on the headlights all the rear lights light up. If it is indeed a ground issue, wouldn't it prevent the R rear lights from coming when I turn on the headlights as well? Any thought on what is going on and how to trouble shoot it?

Sounds like an earthing issue. You could connect the brake light return terminal to the battery negative with a long piece of wire to test, different parts of the car can have different return paths especially if there is corrosion in the area of the brake light in question

Give the inside of the body of the lamp holder, where the pins go if it is that type of bulb, a good clean with scotchbrite.

thanks . the lights have suddenly started working again. Will follow advice when/if they stop working again.
