Breaking in a new finishing plastering trowel

I've just got a new Ragni 14" trowel. I've heard that they should be filed around the corners lightly to round off. Is this recommended?

Also, it's got a varnish coating on the underside which has heavy drip marks from when it was drying. Should this be removed and if so, what's a good way to do it? heatgun, sanding etc?

run the corners on a bit of conctrete or a brick. varnish will wear off after use

Have used a bit of wet & dry (sand)paper also to help round the edges.

Filing the corners will help, though it is handy sometimes to have a keen angle on the trowel when getting tight into a ceiling corner. I personally have never done it, although i have filed out the odd nick on the blade edge.

I would only try it on the top* corners of the trowel for now and see how you get on.

*the top corners are what i would consider as the corners nearest your thumb and forefinger when holding the trowel.
