I want to fit a breather membrane on OSB sheathing on a timber frame, under battens and timber cladding - is there any difference between the expensive house wrap stuff such as Tyvek, and a less expensive roofing membrane, such as Cromar Vent 3? Is any breathable membrane suitable?

Cheers
Richard

There are differences, as some membranes rely on an air gap under the membrane for it to work.

The manufacturer will state if it is suitable for wrapping a frame.
